Today we started with Dorothy sharing with us what VISIBLE learning looks like. The main idea is that teaching and learning should be visible to teachers and learners. Dorothy spoke about children in the past failing at school due to the learning journey being hidden from them. I think back to my school years - where I would just receive a comment like "well done - good work "- I was a student that could not read the teacher's mind and therefore struggled with what understanding what was expected of me. Thank goodness we have a new path to learning. We need to look around our classrooms and ask ourselves - can we see what is being taught and can we see what is being learnt? also, ask yourself, is the teaching/learning visible to both teacher and student, and is it visible to the family/whanau/caregivers?
Make rewindable learning available by using videos, images, texts from various books and websites that support the main idea. It is all about hooking in our learners.
Multi-Modal - This is about engaging 'the hook' - learning/ teaching online. The Manaiakalani Programme is:
Motivating our learners so they stay engaged in the curriculum especially the secondary students where the prospect of leaning is less appealing - create an inviting window for our learners - a window that they will want to stop and look in and then browse around (just how we see an interesting shop window display that invites us in).
We need to keep developing the Class site and keep the learning fresh and relevant each year. Make it bright and interesting so the learners want to stay in and learn.
Establish authentic audience learning outcomes empowering our learners with the belief that their personal voice is very valuable and powerful.
Important to remember though - what works for some learners may not work for others
Different perspectives and points of view
Modes: use different 'types of texts - written-audio and visual
T Shaped Literacy
This is new to me - (I don't recall having heard of it) - The T represents Wide and Deep - this involves using a wide variety of text types and the Deep is delving deep into the text!
Dave said to us:
Reading is faster than listening
Reading doesn't create noise
Multi-text Database example:
The assumption here is the Main text is a written text. It would be helpful if the other texts were from videos, animation, podcast, infographics, photos, websites, cartoons, quiz or games
Definitions:
Multi- textual = The learner is presented with a variety of texts to read, watch or view. one of complementary, scaffolding, challenging the learner
Multi-Modal = The learner is presented with a variety of texts using a variety of modes including video, animation, audio, podcast, infographic, photos, website or cartoon
CREATE
Google Site
Today the Create session was about Google Sites, another first for me. We set off into our bubble groups and learned about using a Multi-text database, our theme is Greedy Cat. The process was very exciting and I loved the challenge of finding texts to suit our learning. Latham went through the process of how to set out our site. This was a fun session creating our page and choosing our texts. My site still requires some more finishing touches and no doubt as I progress and learn more - there will be changes! Here is the link to my site.
Reminder:
When linking pages to your home page remember to open the preview of the page you are linking. (check you are not giving editing access to your viewers) also when sharing the link to your site - make sure you open the preview and then copy URL - (need to check up on this -as I have written down as important notes - check with Vicki to see if I have done my site right!!)
(Vicki showed us how to make buttons using google drawing/themes. I still need more time and practice to get the buttons right.)
My reflection on today
I thoroughly enjoyed the DFI course today - maybe it was because we had more time to be creative and I am also feeling more comfortable and confident in my new learning environment.
Today Dorothy talked about Sharing. Sharing started many years ago - when we think about it, sharing has been part of our lives as humans since time began. Youtube was created in 2005, The new digital world sharing experience had started. This is an important part of our life today as it brings us all together. (just like in this DFI course) We also see this in many ways with our students today - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, youtube. and of course the newest rave, Tik Tok! Today, we can share digitally to our family and friends who live away from us, this gives us connections that in the past was not possible. I know this through my own experience of seeing my grandson each day on Messenger. However, since I have learned more about Meet, I set up family meets where we get together and share our day's experiences.
DATA
Today was another day full of firsts for me. Each week the DFI seems so full-on and fast-paced, but after I have some of my own playtime and sharing time with Miriam, I always come away each week with some new skills. The hardest part for me is getting time to keep up the practice. I am learning that I have to be kind to myself and remember I know more now in week four than I did when I started my journey.
Chalk 'n Talk: Google Forms
Vicki presented forms to us today, and how to go about creating one. You can choose a template or start with a blank one (which is recommended.) We also filled out a form called 'Meet the team' and then added the link beside our name.
Steps to create a form:
Drive - new - forms
Add questions- select question type (short, paragraph, multiple)
use the add new question function (circle with +)
3 ways to send the form -email, link, embed
Viewing response data -can see a summary -can export & link data to a spreadsheet
Today I created my own form - once again this is all new learning for me. I have answered many of these forms myself for Grey High School, but to be the creator of one was a whole new experience. I had fun creating this and sharing this form with my family and friends to get their responses as well.
Google My Maps:
Another new tool for me today was to learn how to use Google My Maps. I haven't used digital maps much before except to look at them while planning a holiday. The struggle was real with this one.. I had very little control over my map - one minute it was too large, then the next it was too small. To be honest I still have not had a proper play ( this is a challenge I have set myself to do!!) We were shown how to insert pins, learn how far it is from one place to another.
The map below is where different members of the DFI team would like to go for a holiday. Our 'meet the team' form was used to create the map below.
Deep Dive with Vicki
Sheets
Google sheets: Arrrggggg!!!! Vicki made it all sound so easy, while I was watching the presentation I thought "yip I got this" everything is there, I just need to fill in the gaps (so full of confidence) off I went into my bubble of beginners. Thanks to Venessa our facilitator who at times probably felt like she was on repeat mode..it was fantastic to learn and share with others in my bubble as we were all at the same level of learning. We asked lots of questions and this made the learning fun and enjoyable.
We learned how to:
Freeze rows and columns to lock headings by using the freeze pan
how to get averages by using the sigma button
how to use the drag button in the corner of a cell
how to use the different options at top of spreadsheet
How to make the columns smaller by hi-lighting it and then shrinking it.
Another activity today, was to select a student's blog and then break it down on to a spreadsheet. This was very challenging for me - my daughter's words were ringing in my ears.."A lesson felt is a lesson learned!!" Vicki guided me through the process step by step. I loved seeing the whole process of selecting months/ years of posts from a student's blog, breaking the data down on a sheet, and then sending the data to a graph. This activity gave me a clear vision of the ability to create, learn, and share. Sheets is another part of google suite I will have to spend ALOT more time playing with.
Reminder: of how to put a graph on to a new sheet
Open explore (bottom of page)
Choose my graph of choice
Click the + button on the bottom of the sheet
Click on the 3 dots (in my graph)
Select option - move to own sheet
This is my graph below
Blogging
The biggest issue I have is remembering how to get something from one place and putting into another- for example sending my sheet to my blog ( need to do regularly, so I remember),
Reminder: Doc to Blog
file
publish to web
embed
select size
hi-light then c/c
go to blog
HTML - c/v then back to compose -should see a grey box!
Reminder: Blogging <ahref="insert URL here>insert display txt here </a>( this is how to insert a link into a comment on blog)
Over the last week, I have been playing around with my new found knowledge from week two. I tidied up my emails by creating folders, sent scheduled emails for 8 am. I loved using the pinning tabs..keeps everything tidy up top!! I set up a google meet with a home buddy to explore a bit more. Set up my google keep and used for school and personal, as well as introducing this to my family so we can share our holiday lists and recipes. One thing I did not pick up through our lesson was how to do ripping of text..however spending a bit of time playing I taught myself - this is now my favourite part of keep and I showed a few students how to use this. I now use Google calendar more regularly. An extra I did this week was to tidy up my bookmarks and put everything into folders, and I'm loving my new look!!
MEDIA
This week we focused on Media and its place in Learn, Create, Share. We were shown a few ways media works in our learning environment. We learned about SISOMO -The idea is targeting and hooking in our learners. Empowering our learners to find the connection (learning by being creative)
The idea is to "Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results"
John Dewey
SISOMO = sight, sound, and motion. To capture the audience - tips:
DIY Filmmaking (anyone can do) - get a tripod for stable shooting, if using your phone to film, use ph on landscape.
Live streaming-can use google meet, drone - great for any sporting event
Green Screen - if using a blue backdrop and the person has blue eyes - they can get lost
Personally, I love anything arty that involves creating, especially cake decorating this is my ideal world -
however when it came time for me to create something digitally, this proved to be more difficult, but perseverance paid off (I can fully appreciate how daunting some tasks can be for students now - especially when they get given a task that is unknown to them)
While Dorothy was presenting, we all got to write in the comment section what we created while in lockdown, it was great seeing the multitude of talent we all had, and I realised then however small it may seem - we are all capable of creating and learning no matter what our age.
Another first for me was to create a Youtube account and made my own playlist. I have always enjoyed searching and watching Youtube but having my own playlist is amazing. In the past I would see a video I liked and always think I will remember what to search for if needed again ..but I don't!!
I understand the importance, of how to set up my youtube account, and make sure our uploads are always set to unlisted, make sure commenting is turned off. (we were advised that children under 13 should not have personal Youtube accounts, this is for their safety.) We then broke off into our bubbles and set about creating our own playlists, I had extra help from Vicki my facilitator - thank you!!
Reminder: Adding videos to my playlist, find a video, click on the symbol of 3 lines + add to already made folder or create a new one, Change to unlisted (world icon or padlock for private)close down the save to screen.
Embed to blog: select your video-share-embed-hi-lite link, copy-go to your blog, open a new post-add title-HTMLview-make sure cursor is at end of link-ctrl v - should get a grey box-preview post - if happy publish
I managed to embed my chosen youtube video successfully
Venessa talked to us about Google Draw, (this is the tool for any task!!)
Mindmaps and flow charts, Digital drawings, word banking, concept drawings, comic strips, storyboard, digital portraits, digital art, visual instructions, concept drawings, infographics, and more!
Very useful slides as to how to set up your page, checking your sharing permissions, tips, and tricks
We then went into our bubble groups and created our own 'About Me' for our blog.
We learned how to set page size using FILE - set background colour, add an image using png (no background), Sharing download as png - embed by publishing to the web, put in HTML.
Maria talked us through Movement, sight, sound to make the slides more engaging. Importance of
keeping the slides uniform, so the learners do not get distracted.
Maria also talked about how to utilise the tools that are built into slides to allow learners and ME!! to create. This one is going to take a lot of playing around for me - but I love the look and idea of using slides.
Youtube / Draw / Slides (we had to choose one of these)
We then broke off into small groups after choosing what we needed extra help in - I went back into a youtube group and set about creating a playlist with extra help from my facilitator. thanks again, Vicki!!
Create: Making meaning of content - Slides
I chose to Doodle myself in a portrait - I missed the presentation due to going to the Drs, but gave it ago later that night...this was incredibly frustrating and eventually, I called 'timeout' on this one (but will go back and have another go!!) Anyway, I went in and had a play in animation slides - I thought id give it a go by following the instructions, Although I did not fully animate I was still happy that I created five slides and added a ship to my scene..The next stage was to embed - which I did successfully below:
This past week I have practiced some of the knowledge I gained from week one. One of my fears was going into my drive and tidying up files and creating new folders (this has always been a no, no for me as I'm good at deleting!!) this may seem like something small, but the confidence I gained was empowering!
I encouraged some students I was working with to try the heading tool, voice type, and also the explore button- they did know about them but said they forget to use them, so they appreciated the friendly reminder. For me personally, I loved practicing using the table to create more displays (LOVE this!!)
We had a discussion about Hapara Dashboard (need to check if I have access before week 3)
AKO Create Share Learn
1. The Manaiakalani programme supports communities of learning move from the analogue world to the digital world
2. Increasing teacher effectiveness and accelerating learning outcomes
In this digital environment the key message is:
Learn by reading authentic texts, sharing ideas by discussion, thinking critically and developing strategies, collaborating, and making choices in learning, creating, and sharing.
Learn is about engaging with existing knowledge but also learning new (a lot for me) we were encouraged to use what we already knew and share what we learned today here on our blog.
Quote: Using the learn create share framework to manage learning in a digital world
MANAGING YOUR WORKFLOW
Chalk ‘n Talk: Today we discussed workflow and how this can help us if we keep our computers tidy and organised. Some things we covered today were how to:
Schedule emails for the morning so no late-night emails necessary
Accepting invites for meets
How to set up signatures
Chalk ‘n Talk: Meet
We had a presentation on how to use meet appropriately. I learned that meet was originally created for businesses and not classrooms so this is why we cannot mute students.
We can create a meet by inviting through G calendar, google apps or GMail
We learned how to present our screen for sharing and recording a meet (you can only record the meet if you set up the meeting)
Google meet allows up to 250 people for remote meetings. Allows video calling, screen sharing, live streaming, and can also record sessions. Make sure you wear headphones if sharing the room with other people.
Reminder: To present your screen - click present and chose one of the following (entire screen, window or chrome tabs.) To record click on the 3 dots and click the record button.
With my mind still bulging from week one and the problems I had still clearly etched in my mind, I fronted up for week two of my DFI course. Thankfully this time around I got to see all the presentations and I felt a little bit more at ease, UNTILL I went into my bubble and had to try and share my two chosen choices. This was confusing for me as it was my first time trying this and somehow I managed to share Rapahoe Beach and my song at the same time. (if only I had slowed down and read the instructions!!) Later on that day after playing around and following my nose, I managed to do this successfully!! (phew another 'I can do it, notched on my belt!😆)
Keep is a handy tool for jotting down notes. I used this a few times with students to help them create a plan for their class subjects/ assignments while in lockdown. Today l learned that I could share notes with my contacts, create reminders, copy to google doc and add photos to notes.
One task I did not completely understand was the ripping of text ...need to research more (update-played around and taught myself this one - LOVE IT!!)
EXPLORE TIME: This was a good chance for me to clean out my inbox and sort my starred and unread emails!! I had fun setting up labels and moving emails into the appropriate labels.
Chalk ‘n Talk: Calendar
How to change your settings for Monday - Friday for work
To set the calendar for either day, week, month or year
How to create an event - click on date, add title, guests, location, description then save
The last part of the session was about us creating a meet from google calendar. I have always been the one invited, so it was a great opportunity to learn something new. In this process, we also learned:
the inviter is the only one who can record the meeting. After a couple of small issues, I did work it out in the end..(my notches are growing)
We were paired up with a buddy from our bubble group. I set up a meet by inviting Deb through calendar, and the task was to record ourselves while showing off our chosen students' blog, then we had to embed the video to our blog. Unfortunately, my video with Deb did not work (sorry Deb). I had another session with my home buddy Miriam today and although I missed the brief on what we were to discuss, for me, this was more about the process of me creating the meet and then embedding the video to my blog.
Reminder: To create our meet and record. Go to apps find Meet - add a name/s to start a meeting, continue, join now, add friends to invite, present now, select chrome tab, choose your blog post that you are going to share, share, click on 3 dots, record meeting, ask for consent, accept, when you see the red button you are recording and when finished recording - go back to 3 dots and press stop record.
This is my second attempt at videoing myself presenting on google meet.
